Second National Front of the Escambray
Political: A guerrilla type leftist, military
organization
supporting to be anti-Castro; operating in Cuba with
leadership in U.
S., in exile. Formerly recognized as one of the main
forces
fighting in opposition to Batista. Leader, Commander,
Eloy
GUTIERREZ Menoyo, controversial figure, accused of being
pro-communist;
has communist background; radically left with marked
tendency to cover
this through issuance of moderate phrases. Supports
the CRC, with
lip service hot part of it. Its received financial
support from
CRC.
Leading Personalities: In U. S. Eloy GUTIERREZ Menoyo,
leader;
Dr. Luis Duany, appointed Pres. Of proposed exile "The
Unity" in
Washington D. D. June 1962, which included
second-echelon
representatives of Manolo RAY Aureliano SANCHEZ Arango, and
ELC); Maj.
Armando FLEITES Diaz, Sec Gen: Emilio CABALLERO Castillo;
Theodoro
IZQUIERDO Marquez; Eusebio OJEDA Diaz; Mercedes GUTIERREZ

II. HISTORY
Date and Place of Origin: Present SFNE in fall 1959,
Cuba. Original SFNE, 1957, Cuba.
Principal Activities to Date: Claim to have several
bands of
guerrillas fighting in Escambray. Engaged in sabotage;
burning
cane fields, tobacco warehouses, government buildings;
providing
supplies and medicines to guerrillas (most of the guerrillas
have now
been eliminated by crackdown of Castro forces). Fall
of 1961,
Elio GUTIERREZ Menoyo raised some $10,000 through sale of
bonds in New
York and New Jersey for purchase of equipment. SFNE
office in
exile attacked 30 July 1962 by former S. I. M. members,
along with 30
November Movement and MRRC offices. Representative
participated
in counterrevolutionary meetings to form a proposed "The
Unity" in
Washington, July 1962.
III. CURRENT STATUS
Selling bonds to purchase arms in U. S. continues.
Current
information connects SFNE with ALPHA 66 group; Elio
GUTIERREZ Menoyo
generally believed to be A-66 Military Coordinator; SFNE
members
participated in attacks by A-66; munitions used
belonged to SFNE
leader. Also reported: SFNE and A-66 have joined
forces but this
is being kept secret and only leaders aware of same.
Inside Cuba,
SFNE disorganized and can do nothing. Claim to have
couriers
going in and out of Cuba weekly; taking foodstuffs (ration
form) and
munitions; supposedly cache it and bring information out to
exile;
trying to make up 20,000 rations, contained in small plastic
envelopes,
5" x 8"; claim to have made 4,000; objective not to store in
Miami but
send to Cuba immediately.
